Sweedish composer Thomas Huttenlocher (aka I Awake) is the newest to the Ultimae Records roster of artists. The label has put out a small taste (3 track EP) for fans in advance of the artist’s full length CD to be released later this year.

I Awake makes moody and contemplative music through the use of slow haunting vocals, driving rhythms, and charming melodies.

Ultimae stretches its musical boundaries while keeping its main theme steadily in tact: panoramic and cinematic music.

New Release: Nalepa - Pomme Granite Dub EP

Released: February 2007
buy: Nalepa - Pomme Granite Dub EP @ Fake Science [$2]

Our man Nalepa does it again with his second EP entitled Pomme Granite Dub. This EP explores a slightly harder edge of the ambient-glitch-dub sound that the LA producer/music software guru is known for. You may recall Nalepa’s 4th of July EP, which is a delicate and melodic body of work. The Pomme Granite Dub EP pushes the melodies into the realm of glitch-psychedelia as it punches the rhythms with more intensity.

Nalepa is set to release a CD/DVD of remixes by many notable experimental musicians (David Last, Glitch Mob, Ruxpin, RD, Deru, Random, Bluetech and more…) from his Flatlands album, all with videos by prominent visual artists. The Flatlands Remix is coming out on Native State Records soon.

The Seedling Escape presents Photosynthesis

seedling icon 2.jpg released January 2007
buy: The Seedling Escape - Photosynthesis @ Fake Science

This is the release we’ve been waiting for since Autumn, and alluded to in our last post of the year.

The Seedling Escape artists are Ooah and Kitty-D from Los Angeles and San Francisco respectively. These cats have been playing shows relentlessly since their first live collaboration at Priceless, False Profit’s summer campout, last summer. Their live blend of original material and dj’d tracks (remixed on the fly) has been in demand across the Western portion of the continent: Vancouver, Nelson BC, Austin, Seattle, Portland, Hawaii, Mexico, Denver, and all points in between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The boys use two laptops jacked into a DJ mixer and one turntable for Ooah’s otherworldly vinyl scratching. Every show they play is reworked, remixed, and reconstructed. No two shows are alike.

The Seedling Escape presents to you Photosynthesis: a 50 minute mix of completely original (and fresh) material with appearances from Random Rab, LayerZ (aka Audiovoid), and Epcot. This release really harks back to the mixtape days, designed to break out new music on the street level.
Photosynthesis covers many of the the band’s diverse sounds: downtempo, glitch-hop, dubstep, and IDM. The mixing is smooth and Ooah’s turntablism gives the release the fresh element of their live shows.
Even if you have seen The Seedling Escape perform every show they’ve played, this release is highly recommended.

These two releases from Abel Okugawa are a mellow excursion reminiscent of late-1990’s electronica with a lounge edge. Both have vocals and tabla performances from Okugawa’s mates Loren Oppenheimer and Rahimah von Briesen (respectively), as well as some acoustic guitar on Magic Cuts by Troy Robuck.

LUX destroys the Fake Science Top 10 Chart

In a massive show of support for a homegrown artist, LUX (aka Rodman) tore up the Fake Science Top 10 sales chart in a matter of days.

Top 10 Chart

Down For Life (LP) is at #1
Booty (EP) hit #6

Not just that, but new customers who came in to purchase the LUX releases also found other albums they dug and purchased from the Fake Science catalogue.
We’re very proud to be able to release this material, and we’re really proud of our San Francisco glitch-mobby breakbeat-freaker scene for supporting LUX and Fake Science.

Dataspirit - Time Shift EP

Time Shift EP cover released December 2006
buy: Dataspirit @ Fake Science

Dataspirit’s first release, “Timeshift EP”, is an exploration of two of my favorite electronic styles, downbeat and atmospheric drum and bass (DnB). These two seemingly different styles often blend well because they use similar sounds and compatible BPMs. To those familiar with DnB this may seem an odd juxtaposition because the average beat range for DnB sits in the 160-180 beats per minute, but when you half time the beat you are now in the 80-90 bpm range that most downbeat falls into.

Atmospheric DnB is often associated with artists such as Blame or LTJ Bukem, who took the DnB rhythm patterns, removed a lot of the darker industrial underpinnings and replaced them with jazz structures and smooth melodic ambient pads ala Brian Eno’s “Music for Airports”.

Following in this classic atmospheric structure, “Timeshift” uses long ambient pads with rhodes work integrated with very digital sounding rhythm patterns to create the definitive DnB structure. At the same time, Logan (the man behind the album) uses large spaces and half-timed beats to create the downbeat sound that works so well. The album starts out with simplistic downbeat feel that slow progresses towards the rich complexity of DnB, adding in orchestra elements and textures as the EP expands.

I first heard Logan’s sound when he entered the Monkey Love Records remix contest that we ran here at Fake Science. After further communication he sent me some of his original material and I knew this was something special and worth adding to the catalog. The EP is based on a live set that he had developed for a festival and with some modifications Logan has created an EP worth checking out and delving into.

LUX (aka Rodman) has been ripping up dancefloors, terrorizing subwoofers, and fuckin’ up heads up and down the California coastline for nearly two years. After courting him for a year, we managed to get him to self-release his debut release(s) exclusively through Fake Science.

Down For Life is an LP that moves through glitch-hop, downtempo, and midtempo (113 beats per minute - patent pending). The sound defies better explanation, and the composition is stellar. Just listen to the samples.

Booty is an EP that we consider an epilogue to the LP that contains 4 slamming dancefloor movers. The first three are midtempo (113bpm yet again), and the last track, NuSchool is a 137bpm rager.

Of particular note is LUX’s ability to integrate the guitar work of Sage into the purely electronic tracks. Unlike many organic/electronic hybrids, LUX manages to maintain the integrity of the guitar work and seamlessly blend it into the overall sound. Particularly Starrkannon on Booty, and Nuclear War and Interplanetary on Down For Life.

LUX’s releases were unleashed three days ago, and raced to the top of the Fake Science Top 10 Chart with Down For Life landing at #2 and Booty landing at #6.

Carbon Based Lifeforms (artist’s website) returns for their second album, World of Sleepers. This album is a deep ambient journey punctuated by clever hypnotic drum rhythms. CBL’s sound is characterized by beautiful arpeggiated synths with warm basslines that fits right into Ultimae Records’ signature cinematic sound.

The sound is clear at all frequencies - crisp highs, clear mids, and warm deep bass. World of Sleepers displays stellar mixing & sound engineering as well as Ultimae’s historical high quality mastering (done by Huby Sea and Vincent Villuis). Without mincing words, this is a beautiful album.

This album was featured on the Fake Science Labreport Podcast in November (download the show), and features three full tracks.
