UK tracks downloads for charts

One of the more interesting things that happened this year was that the UK charts changed the rules in March of 2006. This seemingly simple change allowed for downloads to count towards single sales and now are recognized as a legitimate sale of music. The first hit to leverage this change was Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and thanks to the songs huge demand in digital downloads it became the #1 single of 2006. More and more of the industry is looking at digital distribution and music charts are beginning to show the potential for consumer demand in this arena.
